Watching “ Nawi ,” two things become quickly evident. First, a wonderful lead performance carries the film. Michelle Lemuya Ikeny plays the eponymous character, a 13-year-old who yearns to go to high school but instead must face the patriarchal traditions of her community. She’s set to be married off for a substantial dowry in livestock. Second, the creative team of Toby Schmutzler, Kevin Schmutzler, Vallentine Chelluget and Apuu Mourine is so determined to make a salient point about child marriage that they deprive the film of its cinematic and entertainment value. In shifting focus to their political statement, the four co-directors fail to give their lead actor the showcase her strong performance demands. Selected to represent Kenya at the Oscars, “Nawi” takes place in the rural region of Turkana in the northern part of the East African nation. It’s based on true events and begins with its steadfast and studious young protagonist earning top marks in her high school entrance exams. As she’s being celebrated by her teacher and friends, and as a TV news crew interviews her for her academic accomplishments, a plan is hatched by her father Eree (Ochungo Benson) to marry her off to a much older man. Being the only daughter in her family, it falls upon her to save them and sacrifice herself in order that the price paid for the dowry can help sustain them. As she writes in her journal and the audience hears in voiceover, the price is “60 sheep, eight camels, 100 goats. No more, no less.” Before the wedding, the film spends time showing Nawi’s patriarchal family construct and the complicated interrelationships within it. As head of household, Eree has two wives: Ekai (Nungo Marrianne Akinyi) and Rosemary (Michelle Chebet Tiren). Nawi was born to Rosemary, the second and younger wife. These early scenes build real drama and tension in the family. Both women believe Nawi’s place is as a wife and mother, totally buying into their community’s traditions. Ekai is forthright and matter of fact about it, while Rosemary lovingly tries to convince Nawi to see the bright side, believing she could end up with a smart daughter just like she did. This mother-and-daughter dynamic is warmly portrayed, and the actors show palpable affection that explains how Nawi grew up to become courageous and graceful — she had lots of love and support. Additionally, Nawi has a poignant and playful relationship with her brother, Joel (Joel Liwan), even if they come from different mothers. Throughout this setup, Ikeny holds the film together with a performance rich in emotional clarity. The directors choose to play many scenes on her face, capturing her reactions to whatever’s unfolding in copious close-ups. Ikeny is always watchable and manages to convey silently what her character is feeling. For such a young actor, she comfortably and seemingly easily does what some actors take decades to achieve: fill the frame and single-handedly elevate their film’s artistic quality. Even as the screenplay runs out of ideas and resorts to obvious melodrama, Ikeny remains the sole reason to engage with “Nawi.” The character goes through a lot: she escapes, she tries to hitchhike to Nairobi, she becomes a mentor and teacher to a group of boys her age, and she has to make many critical decisions. Throughout this long journey, Ikeny shows Nawi as courageous, defiant, scared and lost all at once. Both character and actor mature onscreen and show real grit and conviction. However, even Ikeny’s performance cannot save the film once it hurtles to its conclusion. Where it had begun as a character study, “Nawi” fades out to become a rather rote PSA. The film loses artistic merit and dramatic credence as it desperately tries to make a point about child marriage. While this is a grave issue that needs to be addressed and loudly amplified to the audience, such an obvious approach is not how the issue should be tackled onscreen. The filmmakers resort to hammy techniques, such as having the actor address the camera, and in the process forget their main character and the story they set up to tell. Clearly, the filmmakers had good intentions, collaborating with various NGOs to tell the story, but the film ultimately becomes no more than an educational tool — something that could have directly come from one of these humanitarian institutions.Drivers at mercy of cowboy parking firms: Motorists are handed 41,000 tickets every day by private firms - as motoring groups demand crackdown By DAVID CHURCHILL Published: 19:33 GMT, 26 November 2024 | Updated: 20:30 GMT, 26 November 2024 e-mail 9 View comments Motorists are being hit with a record 41,000 parking tickets a day - despite repeated Government promises to crackdown on ‘bandit’ operators. Shocking figures reveal ruthless private companies issued 3.8million tickets to drivers between July and September - or one every two seconds on average. A further 3.4million were issued between April and June this year, according to official figures. It means the parking firms are on track to issue demands for up to £1.5billion in fines this year (2024/25) as the number slapped on drivers is on course to hit a record 14.6million. This would be up from the record 12.8million issued last year (2023/24) and 11.1million in 2022/23. And the figures apply only to car parks run by private firms, not councils. Ministers tonight faced renewed calls to get tough on cut-throat firms causing misery for millions of motorists with their army of traffic wardens amid the cost of living squeeze. It comes after the previous Tory Government withdrew a long-awaited code of practice aimed at protecting drivers from ‘cowboy’ operators. Former ministers caved in after parking firms launched a judicial review of the proposals, which included slashing the maximum fines from £100 to £50 and banning debt collectors from hounding motorists who do not pay within a time limit. A further 3.4million were issued between April and June this year, according to official figures The number of tickets issued for the second quarter of this year (2024/25) has more than doubled since 2018, when 1.7million were doled out during the same period. If this year’s increase continues at the same rate, it will reach a record high of nearly 14.6million tickets issued in 2024/25 - 1.8million more than the current record high of 12.8million in 2023/24. With fines capped at £100, private firms are on course to issue demands for up to nearly £1.5billion worth of fines this year. Motorists have been waiting years for a Government-devised code of practice to crackdown on cut-throat private parking firms, amid complaints of bad practices such as deliberately poor signage and not allowing grace periods if motorists don’t return to their cars in time through no fault of their own. A Bill to enable the introduction of a new code of conduct received royal assent in March 2019. But the code was withdrawn by the Conservative government in June 2022 after a legal challenge by parking companies. In June, industry bodies the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community published their own code of practice. It included requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an ‘appeals charter’. But motoring groups criticised it for not including a cap on fines or the removal of debt recovery fees. It means parking firms look set to rake in bumper profits from fines on motorists for some time. AA president Edmund King said: ‘When we managed to get cowboy clampers outlawed, we warned that some of the unscrupulous clampers would enter the private parking territory, and this has been proved right. ‘We accept drivers should never park when they like, and where they like, but far too often cowboy enforcement companies act like Dick Turpin. Better regulation to outlaw some of these bandits is long overdue.’ Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is also the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. A spokesperson for the ministry said: ‘Motorists must be protected when using private car parks and we are determined to drive up standards in the industry RAC Foundation director Steve Gooding added: ‘Private parking is clearly one sector of the economy which appears to be booming but at the expense of millions of motorists each year. ‘These numbers suggest that big questions remain about the way the current system is working - or failing. ‘Drivers must be very wary of where they leave their vehicles as they head out to do their Christmas shopping because these numbers suggest that even the smallest indiscretion is likely to lead to a fine which will erase any sense of festive cheer. ‘If ministers wanted to give motorists a Christmas present they should crack on with implementing the long-promised reforms to parking management which have now been on the statute book for more than five years.’ The figures were based on the number of records obtained from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) by companies chasing vehicle owners for alleged infringements in private car parks, such as at shopping centres, leisure facilities and motorway service areas. Some 172 parking firms requested access to documents, with ParkingEye the most active between July and September - buying 594,000 records. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said: ‘Motorists must be protected when using private car parks and we are determined to drive up standards in the industry. ‘We know how much of an issue this is for drivers, which is why we will set out further details on the private parking code of practice as soon as possible.’ Share or comment on this article: Drivers at mercy of cowboy parking firms: Motorists are handed 41,000 tickets every day by private firms - as motoring groups demand crackdown e-mail Add commentWhat is spondylolisthesis, the back condition that derailed Luigi Mangione's life?
Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Edwards will play Christmas Day games for the first time on Wednesday as the NBA delivers its 77th year of contests on the holiday. French centre Wembanyama, last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, will lead the San Antonio Spurs into New York to face the Knicks, who have the league's longest holiday history. The Knicks have played the most Christmas games of any NBA club at 56 entering this year, the first coming in 1947, the year the first NBA Christmas game was played. Wembanyama, a 20-year-old who stands 7-foot-3 (2.21m), averages 24.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 4.0 blocked shots a game for the Spurs, who return to the Christmas lineup for the first time in eight years. "Very excited just about spending Christmas in New York," Wembanyama said. "Going to be like the movies I hope, maybe get a little snow. "I'll approach it just like any other game. We've got to learn about their team, scout them and apply it for sure. I'm sure it's going to be special. I'm sure the league is going to make it something special that we're going to be able to feel." Edwards, a two-time NBA All-Star guard who helped the United States capture gold at the Paris Olympics, will try to spark the Minnesota Timberwolves on a holiday road trip to Dallas in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals. "Ant-Man" leads the T-Wolves with 25.3 points a game and also has 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.4 steals a contest this season. The league's past three champions will also take the court on Wednesday with the defending champion Boston Celtics playing host to Philadelphia, the 2022 trophy-lifting Golden State Warriors playing host to the Los Angeles Lakers and the 2023 winner Denver Nuggets on the road at Phoenix. Lakers star LeBron James, who turns 40 next Monday, is the NBA career leader in points on Christmas with 476 in a record 18 games on December 25. He and former Miami teammate Dwyane Wade share the lead in wins by a player on Christmas with 10. The Lakers and Knicks share the NBA record for Christmas wins by a team with 24 for each. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Bernard King scoring 60 points, the highest NBA total on Christmas Day. Three other players -- Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain and Slovenian Luka Doncic -- have scored 50 or more in a game on the holiday. Dallas guard Doncic joined the club with a 50-point effort last year. The Lakers (16-13) and Golden State (15-13) are fighting for seventh in the Western Conference just ahead of San Antonio (15-14) and Minnesota and Phoenix, both 14-14. Dallas is fourth in the West at 19-10, just ahead of Denver 16-11. The Celtics are second in the Eastern Conference at 22-7, ahead of New York (19-10) while Philadelphia has struggled to a 10-17 start, 12th in the East. js/pbSEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean legislative push to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived imposition of martial law fell through on Saturday after most lawmakers from his conservative governing party boycotted the vote. The defeat of the motion is expected to intensify public protests calling for Yoon’s ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea, with a survey suggesting a majority of South Koreans support the president’s impeachment. Yoon’s martial law declaration drew criticism from his own ruling conservative party, but it is also determined to oppose Yoon’s impeachment apparently because it fears losing the presidency to liberals. Impeaching Yoon required support from two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 of its 300 members. The opposition parties who brought the impeachment motion had 192 seats, but only three lawmakers from PPP participated in the vote. The motion was scrapped without ballot counting because the number of votes didn’t reach 200. National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik called the result “very regrettable” and an embarrassing moment for the country’s democracy that has been closely watched by the world. “The failure to hold a qualified vote on this matter means we were not even able to exercise the democratic procedure of deciding on a critical national issue,” he said. Opposition parties could submit a new impeachment motion after a new parliamentary session opens next Wednesday. There are worries that Yoon won’t be able to serve out his remaining 2 1⁄2 years in office because his leadership took a huge hit. Many experts say some ruling party lawmakers could eventually join opposition parties’ efforts to impeach Yoon if public demands for it grow further. If Yoon is impeached, his powers will be suspended until the Constitutional Court decides whether to remove him from office. If he is removed, an election to replace him must take place within 60 days. Woo repeatedly urged ruling party members to return to the chamber to participate in the vote, waiting several hours for them to come. At one point, Democratic Party leaders visited a hall on the floor below the main chamber where PPP lawmakers were gathered, attempting to persuade them to vote. After being blocked from entering, they angrily accused the conservatives’ leadership of preventing its lawmakers from voting freely. Earlier Saturday, Yoon issued a public apology over the martial law decree, saying he won’t shirk legal or political responsibility for the declaration and promising not to make another attempt to impose martial law. He said would leave it to his party to chart a course through the country’s political turmoil, “including matters related to my term in office.” “The declaration of this martial law was made out of my desperation. But in the course of its implementation, it caused anxiety and inconveniences to the public. I feel very sorry over that and truly apologize to the people who must have been shocked a lot,” Yoon said. Since taking office in 2022, Yoon has struggled to push his agenda through an opposition-controlled parliament and grappled with low approval ratings amid scandals involving himself and his wife. In his martial law announcement on Tuesday night, Yoon called parliament a “den of criminals” bogging down state affairs and vowed to eliminate “shameless North Korea followers and anti-state forces.” The turmoil resulting from Yoon’s bizarre and poorly-thought-out stunt has paralyzed South Korean politics and sparked alarm among key diplomatic partners like the U.S. and Japan. Tuesday night saw special forces troops encircling the parliament building and army helicopters hovering over it, but the military withdrew after the National Assembly unanimously voted to overturn the decree, forcing Yoon to lift it before daybreak Wednesday. The declaration of martial law was the first of its kind in more than 40 years in South Korea. Eighteen lawmakers from the ruling party voted to reject Yoon’s martial law decree along with opposition lawmakers. Yoon’s speech fueled speculation that he and his party may push for a constitutional amendment to shorten his term, instead of accepting impeachment, as a way to ease public anger over the marital law and facilitate Yoon’s early exit from office. Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main liberal opposition Democratic Party, told reporters that Yoon’s speech was “greatly disappointing” and that the only way forward is his immediate resignation or impeachment. His party called Yoon’s martial law “unconstitutional, illegal rebellion or coup.” The passage of Yoon’s impeachment motion appeared more likely Friday when the chair of Yoon’s party called for his removal on Friday, but the party remained formally opposed to impeachment. On Saturday, tens of thousands of people densely packed several blocks of roads leading up to the National Assembly, waving banners, shouting slogans and dancing and singing along to K-pop songs with lyrics changed to call for Yoon’s ouster. Protesters also gathered in front of PPP’s headquarters near the Assembly, angrily shouting for its lawmakers to vote to impeach Yoon. A smaller crowd of Yoon’s supporters, which still seemed to be in the thousands, rallied in separate streets in Seoul, decrying the impeachment attempt they saw as unconstitutional. Lawmakers on Saturday first voted on a bill appointing a special prosecutor to investigate stock price manipulation allegations surrounding Yoon’s wife. Some lawmakers from Yoon’s party were seen leaving the hall after that vote, triggering angry shouts from opposition lawmakers. On Friday, PPP chair Han Dong-hun, who criticized Yoon’s martial law declaration, said he had received intelligence that during the brief period of martial law Yoon ordered the country’s defense counterintelligence commander to arrest and detain unspecified key politicians based on accusations of “anti-state activities.” Hong Jang-won, first deputy director of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, told lawmakers in a closed-door briefing Friday that Yoon had ordered him to help the defense counterintelligence unit to detain key politicians. The targeted politicians included Han, Lee and Woo, according to Kim Byung-kee, one of the lawmakers who attended the meeting. The Defense Ministry said Friday it suspended three military commanders including the head of the defense counterintelligence unit over their involvement in enforcing martial law. Vice Defense Minister Kim Seon Ho has told parliament that Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun ordered the deployment of troops to the National Assembly after Yoon imposed martial law. Opposition parties accused Kim of recommending to Yoon to enforce martial law. Kim resigned Thursday, and prosecutors imposed an overseas travel ban on him.PLYMOUTH, Mich. , Nov. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Loc Performance ("Loc") is pleased to announce significant capital investments at its Lapeer, Michigan facility, following recently won defense contracts for missile system structures. Vegas mom arrested 'after giving son's underage friend eight shots then raping him' By LAUREN ACTON-TAYLOR FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 22:13, 11 December 2024 | Updated: 22:17, 11 December 2024 e-mail 16 shares 13 View comments A mother accused of plying her teenage son's underage friend with shots of alcohol before sexually assaulting him was arrested in Las Vegas after nearly a year on the run. Christina Cobb, 42, was discovered by police on November 28 after using a California ID and social security number for an individual named Olga. She had four outstanding warrants for her arrest in connection with two separate cases after she didn't show up for her court appearance in January. Cobb now faces an additional charge for obtaining or using personal identification of another person to avoid or delay being prosecuted for an unlawful act. She was accused of providing alcohol and marijuana to her son and his friends at a birthday party at her house in May 2022. A month later, she was charged with two counts of statutory sexual seduction and one count of lewdness with a child under the age of 16. The alleged victim said that he had been provided alcohol and was 'allowed' to 'sleep in her bed,' according to Las Vegas Police, as reported by 8 News Now . The teen told police he suspected he had eight shots and 'felt drunk' before Cobb sexually assaulted him. The age of consent in Nevada is 16 years old. It's alleged that Cobb told the teen victim to leave her bed before her husband came home, according to police reports. 'She's considered a danger to the community based on the charges - the inappropriate relations, sexual relations, with a child,' said Supervisory Deputy US Marshal Ray Venegas. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Greg McGarity had reason to be concerned. The Gator Bowl president kept a watchful eye on College Football Playoff scenarios all season and understood the fallout might affect his postseason matchup in Jacksonville. What if the Southeastern Conference got five teams into the expanded CFP? What if the Atlantic Coast Conference landed three spots? It was a math problem that was impossible to truly answer, even into late November. Four first-round playoff games, which will end with four good teams going home without a bowl game, had the potential to shake up the system. The good news for McGarity and other bowl organizers: Adding quality teams to power leagues — Oregon to the Big Ten, Texas to the SEC and SMU to the ACC — managed to ease much of the handwringing. McGarity and the Gator Bowl ended up with their highest-ranked team, No. 16 Ole Miss, in nearly two decades. People are also reading... "It really didn't lessen our pool much at all," McGarity said. "The SEC bowl pool strengthened with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma. You knew they were going to push traditional SEC teams up or down. Texas ended up pushing just about everyone down." The long waiting game was the latest twist for non-CFP bowls that have become adept at dealing with change. Efforts to match the top teams came and went in the 1990s and first decade of this century before the CFP became the first actual tournament in major college football. It was a four-team invitational — until this year, when the 12-team expanded format meant that four quality teams would not be in the mix for bowl games after they lose next week in the first round. "There's been a lot of things that we've kind of had to roll with," said Scott Ramsey, president of the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. "I don't think the extra games changed our selection model to much degree. We used to look at the New York's Six before this, and that was 12 teams out of the bowl mix. The 12-team playoff is pretty much the same." Ramsey ended up with No. 23 Missouri against Iowa in his Dec. 30 bowl. A lot of so-called lesser bowl games do have high-profile teams — the ReliaQuest Bowl has No. 11 Alabama vs. Michigan (a rematch of last year's CFP semifinal), Texas A&M and USC will play in the Las Vegas Bowl while No. 14 South Carolina and No. 15 Miami, two CFP bubble teams, ended up in separate bowls in Orlando. "The stress of it is just the fact that the CFP takes that opening weekend," Las Vegas Bowl executive director John Saccenti said. "It kind of condenses the calendar a little bit." Bowl season opens Saturday with the Cricket Celebration Bowl. The first round of the CFP runs Dec. 20-21. It remains to be seen whether non-CFP bowls will see an impact from the new dynamic. They will know more by 2026, with a planned bowl reset looming. It could include CFP expansion from 12 to 14 teams and significant tweaks to the bowl system. More on-campus matchups? More diversity among cities selected to host semifinal and championship games? And would there be a trickle-down effect for everyone else? Demand for non-playoff bowls remains high, according to ESPN, despite increased focus on the expanded CFP and more players choosing to skip season finales to either enter the NCAA transfer portal or begin preparations for the NFL draft. "There's a natural appetite around the holidays for football and bowl games," Kurt Dargis, ESPN's senior director of programming and acquisitions, said at Sports Business Journal's Intercollegiate Athletics Forum last week in Las Vegas. "People still want to watch bowl games, regardless of what's going on with the playoff. ... It's obviously an unknown now with the expanded playoff, but we really feel like it's going to continue." The current bowl format runs through 2025. What lies ahead is anyone's guess. Could sponsors start paying athletes to play in bowl games? Could schools include hefty name, image and likeness incentives for players participating in bowls? Would conferences be willing to dump bowl tie-ins to provide a wider range of potential matchups? Are bowls ready to lean into more edginess like Pop-Tarts has done with its edible mascot? The path forward will be determined primarily by revenue, title sponsors, TV demand and ticket sales. "The one thing I have learned is we're going to serve our partners," Saccenti said. "We're going to be a part of the system that's there, and we're going to try to remain flexible and make sure that we're adjusting to what's going on in the world of postseason college football." OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will not support a Liberal plan to give Canadians a GST holiday and $250 unless the government expands eligibility for the cheques, saying the rebate leaves out "the most vulnerable." The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items like toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Speaking after a Canadian Labour Congress event in Ottawa, Singh says he's open to passing the GST legislation, but the rebate needs to include seniors, students, people who are on disability benefits and those who were not able to work last year. Singh says he initially supported the idea because he thought the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year. But the so-called working Canadians rebate will be sent to those who had an income, leaving out people Singh says need the help. The government intends to include the measures in the fall economic statement, which has not yet been introduced in the House of Commons. The proposed GST holiday would begin in mid-December, lasting for two months. It would remove the GST on prepared foods at grocery stores, some alcoholic drinks, children's clothes and toys, Christmas trees, restaurant meals, books, video games and physical newspapers. A privilege debate has held up all government business in the House since late September, with the Conservatives pledging to continue a filibuster until the government hands over unredacted documents related to misspending at a green technology fund. The NDP said last week they had agreed to pause the privilege debate in order to pass the legislation to usher in the GST holiday. Singh said Tuesday that unless there are changes to the proposed legislation, he will not support pausing the debate. The Bloc Québécois is also pushing for the rebates to be sent to seniors and retirees. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. David Baxter, The Canadian Press
